A Meditation in Orange

I drew the inspiration for this piece after a long walk through the woods right after an autumn rain. I was completely captivated by all the resilient little plants pushing their way up through the damp soil.

Designing this pattern felt like a focused meditation. I decided early on that I didn’t want to use an abundance of colors. I chose this single, vibrant shade of orange-red because it represents that warm, surprising feeling of discovering something beautiful in the wild.

I wanted to capture the exact moment a mushroom unfurls from the earth. The radiating lines on the cap perfectly mimic that natural texture.

The tiny shoots and clusters of fruit surrounding the base make the scene feel complete and totally alive. I hope that as you work through these decorative embroidery motifs, you feel that same sense of quiet resilience. May this project help you find bright, unexpected joy in the simplest places.

Warmth for Your Walls

The Mushroom Outlines & Stems – Stem Stitch

We wanted the main structural lines to be clear, but still have a soft, rounded texture to them. The Stem Stitch is the absolute best choice for this.

This stitch creates a slightly raised, cord-like line that sits beautifully on top of the fabric. It is perfect for outlining organic, natural shapes like the curves of the mushroom caps and the long, slender stems. It immediately gives the fungi a more three-dimensional, lifelike appearance.

The Radial Cap Lines – Straight Stitch

To capture the delicate texture underneath the mushroom cap, we rely on the purest, simplest technique: the Straight Stitch.

You will work point-to-point connections, radiating outward from the center of the cap. It is the most direct way to capture the delicate, regular texture of the mushroom’s gills.

This simple technique gives the flat embroidery an amazing sense of depth. It makes the caps look light but full of tension.

The Surrounding Branches & Berries – Outline Stitch & French Knot

To build a wild, dreamlike forest floor around the base, we use a combination of two very different stitches.

First, we use delicate, continuous Outline Stitches to trace the sinuous, coral-like growth of the branches. The fluid lines look exactly like plants striving upward toward the light.

Then, we add the French Knot. These small, full knots are dotted all along the branches to look like tiny berries. They add a wonderful, three-dimensional bounce that breaks up the smooth lines of the stems. They enrich the layers of the whole scene and make this tiny ecological landscape look absolutely exquisite.
