Every single autumn, I am completely blown away by nature’s unreserved, almost aggressive colors. It feels like the earth knows winter is coming, so it decides to throw one last, massive party and show off a whole year’s worth of vitality all at once.
I was on a hike in the mountains last October when I actually stumbled across a cluster of multicolored mushrooms. They were all crowded together right on the trail.
There were reds, greens, and bright yellows. It literally looked like someone had tripped and dropped an entire palette of oil paints on the forest floor.
It was so beautiful it almost didn’t look real. That single moment inspired this entire printable fall embroidery pattern. I realized that autumn is not an ending at all. It is nature’s most splendid treasure.

The Mushroom Caps, Petals, & Leaves – Satin Stitch
We need these autumn colors to look as rich and vibrant as possible. The Satin Stitch is the absolute best way to achieve this.
By laying your threads tightly parallel to one another, you create a surface that is completely smooth, dense, and actually catches the light.
It makes the colorful mushroom caps and the surrounding leaves look incredibly plump and healthy. It is also the perfect technique for blending those beautiful red, orange, and yellow gradients on the main mushroom.
The Mushroom Gills – Straight Stitch
To contrast the smooth, solid color of the caps, we need some delicate texture underneath. We use the Straight Stitch for the gills.
It is a very simple technique. You just work radiating straight lines from the top of the stem outward toward the edge of the cap.
This perfectly simulates the delicate, ribbed structure of the mushroom gills. It provides a really exquisite, detailed contrast against the heavy color blocks above it.
The White Spots & Flower Centers – French Knot
We need a little bit of playfulness to finish the scene. This is where the French Knot shines.
This stitch is the key to adding fun, tactile dimension to any project. By wrapping the thread around your needle, you create full, raised little dots on the fabric.
We use them for the white spots on the mushrooms and the bright yellow centers of the tiny flowers scattered around the base. Just a few of these knots instantly bring the whole design to life and make it look incredibly vibrant.
